Course overview:

The Hostile Environment Close Protection Operators Course (HECPO) is a theory and competency based training package.

The course has been designed specifically for students who already have close protection training. The course is intended to raise the standard of traditional close protection training to the next level allowing students to operate safely and effectively within challenging theatres around the world.

The course covers the training gaps not covered by the Close Protection Course such as Weapon training, mine awareness, tactical movements with weapons on foot and vehicle, including extractions under fire, walking drills and anti-ambush vehicle drills.

Topics covered include:

  • Competency in weapon handling of all weapon systems used
  • Understanding the use of grab bags and the best use of company and personnel equipment
  • An understanding of foot contact drills with weapons in a hostile environment
  • Vehicle movements tactics and operations
  • Mine awareness and Explosive Remnants of War
  • Understanding Cultural Awareness
  • Rules for the Use of Force
  • Generic Company Compliance
  • B6 Protection and PPE
  • IED/EFP Awareness
  • Range work
  • Casualty Extraction


You must possess a Close Protection Level 3 certificate awarded by a recognized awarding body.

Candidates must be aged 21 or above.

Must have a clean CRB/DBS check (within the last 3 months) prior to attending.

Must have an in date Level 3 or 4 Trauma Medical qualification from a recognised awarding body.

Must be able to communicate effectively in written and spoken English.

Must be of reasonable health and fitness due to the nature of the course.


Assessment is by way of a practical and multiple choice assessment, for IQA reasons some assessments may be filmed for quality purposes.


At the end of the Hostile Environment Close Protection Operators Course you will receive a certificate as proof of attendance.
